Writing on the Wall 2008 – Final Week

See below details of the events that are on this week as part of the WoW Festival.  It’s the last week and there’s great stuff on: a debate on football hosted by Mirror columnist, Brian Reade; an evening with Canongate authors, including Helen Walsh; a Grime, Big Beats and Rhyme night with UK Grime artists and Liverpool Young Writers; plus a pub crawl led by Niall Griffiths and the end festival party with Trojan/Gold in the Shade.

Wednesday 28th May
Who Owns the Beautiful Game?

‘O, Sons of Shankly and descendents of Dixie, where is your beautiful game going?’  Abroad, if the FA gets its way!

Who owns the game?  Can the fans really buy the clubs?  Should they even buy from the club shop?  Money flows in from the USA – debt saddles LFC.  Tesco wants to take Everton to Kirby – but does every little help?   The FA chases the filthy lucre abroad – but how much is one ‘away’ game worth?  And what about the fans?  The fans!  You ‘avin’ a larf; what do they know?  Your chance to have a say, and find out what some of the key players in the game think:

Brian Reade – Daily Mirror Columnist and CityTalk show host
Nicky Allt – The Spirit of Shankly
Dave Kelly – Keep Everton in Our City Campaign

Phrased & Confused: Four commissions for spoken word artists

As part of our third Phrased & Confused outing, the hub is looking to commission four spoken word artists to create new material for our Phrased & Confused festival tent, which will be part of this year’s Summer Sundae Weekender in Leicester between 8-10th August. As many of you know, Phrased & Confused (www.phrasedandconfused.co.uk) explores the creative common ground between lyrics and spoken word, so we’re very excited to be part of one of the UK’s best boutique music festivals.

Each commission is worth £1000. In addition all our commissioned artists will receive a weekend pass for themselves and a guest plus camping space in the artist field and travel expenses to and from the festival. You’ll also receive a stand-alone video of your commissioned festival performance for you to use in your own promotional activity after the festival and the chance to workshop their material at a creative sharing day, facilitated by Stuart Silver, one half of Perrier Award winners, Noble and Silver. The artists we commission will be asked to create at least 15 minutes of new material, and be given the opportunity to perform it at least once at the festival.

We hope that these commissions will be provide a real professional development opportunity for the artists we select. One of Phrased & Confused’s primary aims is to develop audiences for spoken word, and we anticipate that around 2000 people – most of them new to spoken word – will visit the tent during the Festival. As such, the commissions will open up a whole new audience to our commissioned artists.

We’re hoping to get the word out about these commissions to as many interested people as possible – both artists themselves and other individuals who can maybe pass this information on to artists in their networks. Hopefully, you’re one such person, and can either make use of this information yourself, or forward it to artists you know.
The deadline for applications is the 11th June 2008 and you can find out more by either visiting our website or by downloading the Commission Pack by clicking here. If you have any questions or get stuck, please email us: info@phrasedandconfused.co.uk

The Book of Liverpool

a city in short fiction

Ed. by Maria Crossan & Eleanor Rees

with readings from
Dinesh Allirajah, Tracy Aston & Ramsey Campbell

at The Bluecoat, School Lane, Liverpool, L1 3BX.

THU 29 MAY

7.30pm

£4/£3.

The Book of Liverpool features ten stories by Beryl Bainbridge, Brian Patten, Clive Barker, Frank Cottrell Boyce, Ramsey Campbell, Paul Farley, Margaret Murphy, Dinesh Allirajah, James Friel, and Tracy Aston.

Bringing together fiction from some of the city’s most celebrated writers, The Book of Liverpool traces the unique contours that decades of social and economic change can impress on a city. Set against key historical moments from the Second World War to the Capital of Culture year, these stories question what ‘belonging’ and ‘home’ mean in the Liverpudlian context, from the regenerated city centre to satellite suburbs, from the sparring cathedrals to the no-go concrete housing estates. Liverpool emerges in these stories as a city in constant flux: haunted by ghosts, buoyed up by myths, and shifting with an ebb and flow like the Mersey itself.
