Writing on the Wall festival, 2009 is a festival of outsiders: writers, musicians and artists well-known for defying convention and corporate attitudes. WoW 2009 dares to be impolite, fearless, even rude and certainly independent.

Anne Enright – Man Booker Prize Winner 2007

Anne Enright is one of Ireland’s most remarkable fiction writers, injecting new blood into its lyrical tradition, uniting the strength of the old with the grittiness of the new. Her characters, always passionate, sometimes wayward, are seen with an unblinking eye and glints of surreal wit. Her debut novel, The Wig My Father Wore, was shortlisted for the Irish Times/Aer Lingus Irish Literature Prize; her second, What Are You Like?, won the Encore Award and was shortlisted for the Whitbread Novel Award; and her fourth, The Gathering, won the 2007 Man Booker Prize for Fiction.
Like her novels, Anne Enright’s short stories are famed for beguiling plots, sparkling language, and insight into her characters’ lives. Her collection, The Portable Virgin, deals with her keynote themes of families, love affairs, happy and failed sex, and Catholic repression. Through this writer’s alchemy we not only know her characters but also learn to care about their fates, no matter how wilful they are, how reckless or perverse.
Anne Enright has also published a book of humorous essays, Making Babies: Stumbling into Motherhood, described as bearing a visceral and dreamlike witness to the first years of parenthood, and typified by this author’s rare emotional honesty.
Constantly in demand on the writers’ circuit, Anne Enright is making a rare 2009 appearance to read from her latest work and answer your questions about her fiction and fiction-writing techniques.
